Behind on Posting Already!

Hey everyone!

I haven't posted forever, and I am not happy about that! I have so many things I have wanted to post, but I just haven't got around to it. Here is a little update on what has been going on. I am hoping to post some more entries about some Pinterest stuff later this week if I have time.

I was transferred to work at a store in Boise so I have been spending a lot more time on the road commuting to and from work. So far the new location is going well. I am pretty much used to it and ready for the busy holiday season.

Our house progress is going better than expected. As of now (10/29/2012) They have pretty much framed most of the exterior of the house and are working on the interior walls and the roof through this week. Nathan talked to the superintendent today, and it sounds like he plans for it to be done at the beginning of December which means we are 99% sure we will be able to spend Christmas in our new house!

We are super excited because my parents are coming to Boise for this Christmas for the first time, and it would be awesome for them to be able to spend it in our brand new house, not to mention it would be the best Christmas present! Anyways, here are some pictures of the most recent progress. Nathan has been good about taking pictures of every step of the way because he practically lives there when he isn't working!

Our Dream Home

Hey Everyone! Hopefully soon, our dream home will be a reality! We just recently decided to have a house built in the area that we are living currently. We decided on a smaller town close enough to everything, but this way we will still be living in a place with the small town feel that we are used to from growing up in St. Maries.

If everything goes right we are hoping to be able to move in before Christmas, but realistically we will probably be able to move in sometime in the middle of January.

Here are some pictures of what our house and community are going to look like! As we go along in the building process, I will be adding more posts with info to keep everyone updated!

Here is what our floor plan looks like. We will have a 3 car garage, one section of it will be for Nathan's shop. We will have the room labeled "dine" as a workout or game room. Then we have our master bed/bath (with a jetted corner tub in the bathroom!) on one side of the house and then the kids rooms (for future) on the other side of the house with the living room, dining room, and kitchen in the middle of the house. Then there is a bonus room with a bathroom that is above the garage that will be used for a guest room or a family room.

Here is a picture of what the house looks like from the outside. Ours will be flipped the opposite way with the garage on the right hand side instead of the left.
This is a picture of the colors that the house will be painted on the outside. We will probably have the shutters a darker color and eventually paint our garage and front doors darker as well.

Here is a Google map's satellite view of where our house is going to be built (the star marks our property!) We will have one side neighbor when we move in and eventually another side neighbor once someone decides to build beside us! There is a field behind the fence so we won't have any neighbors behind us!

Here is a zoomed out view of our subdivision. We are right off the main highway. You stay to the right thru one round about and then turn right in the second one. The subdivision is small and very quiet which is what we prefer!

One of my Favorite Treats (Orange Dreamsicle Fudge)

Hey everyone! Today I was off so I had a lot of time to devote to Pinterest! I have a lot of dessert recipes saved so I thought I would find something good to make. I decided on Orange Creamsicle Fudge!

I have always loved fudge, but I especially love Orange Creamsicle! I have talked before about how I am NOT a cook. Well I decided that since Pinterest is slowly going to change that anyways, I am going to make the things that I like.  So here is the instructions and pictures for making Orange Creamsicle Fudge.

Ingredients:

  • 6 -ounces (1.5 sticks) butter
  • 2- cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4- cup heavy cream
  • 1- package (12 oz) white chocolate chips
  • 1- jar (7 oz) marshmallow cream (or fluff)
  • 1- tablespoon orange extract
  • orange (or a combination of red and yellow) food coloring

Instructions:

Prepare a 13x9 pan by lining it with aluminum foil and spraying the foil with nonstick cooking spray.

In a large heavy saucepan, combine the sugar, cream, and butter over medium heat.

Continually stir the mixture until the butter melts and the sugar dissolves.

  • Brush down the sides with a wet pastry brush.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil, and once it starts boiling, stir continuously for four minutes.

  • After four minutes of boiling, remove the pan from the heat and immediately stir in the marshmallow cream and white chocolate chips.
  • Stir until the white chocolate has melted and the fudge is completely smooth.
  • Working quickly, pour about a third of the white fudge into a bowl and set aside.
  • To the remaining fudge, add the orange extract and orange food coloring, stirring until it is a smooth, even color. It is important to perform these steps quickly, because the fudge will start to set if you take too long, and the end result will not be smooth.

Pour the orange fudge into the prepared pan and spread it into an even layer.

Drop the white fudge over the top by the spoonful, then drag a table knife or toothpick through the fudge to create orange-white swirls. You can spray your hands with nonstick cooking spray and gently press them into the top to smooth out the swirls, if desired.
\

  • Allow the fudge to set at room temperature for 2 hours, or in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
  • To cut, pull the fudge out of the pan using the foil as handles.
  • Use a large sharp knife to cut the fudge into small 1-inch squares. Store Orange Creamsicle Fudge in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week, and bring it to room temperature to serve.
From how it looks and how the little bit of fudge that was left in the bowl tastes, I am going to be very happy with how this turns out!

I just realized that I didn't do the instructions right. I poured the white into the orange instead of dropping it in by spoonfuls. I am sure it won't make that big of a difference though!

Edit: So even though my fudge tastes AMAZING, for some reason it didn't turn solid. It is a little gooey, but since I am the only one eating it, I just eat it off a spoon and it works just fine. I don't know what I did wrong, but I know that fudge is really hard to make anyways. All that matters is that it tastes good!

Dinner Plan 9/20/12-9/26/12

Hey everyone! So if you know me, you know I am not a cook. How this happened I don't know. My mom, sister, and grandma all are good at cooking and love to cook! Me, not so much! I think that I could have been a good cook, but I don't have the patience for cooking. Well, Pinterest might just change that!

I have found so many good recipes on Pinterest that I am starting to want to cook more and try all these recipes. I am going to start posting our weekly meal plan here with links to the dinners we are going to be trying. I am not going to guarantee that I am the one cooking all of them, but I will be cooking a few times a week. If nothing else, it will make it easy for my husband to find the recipe for whats on the menu instead of trying to ask me while I am working! Please click on the links to check out the recipes!

Thursday 9/20~ Homemade Chicken Nuggets and No-Fry Fries
Friday 9/21~ Hawaiian Sweet Roll Ham Sandwhiches
Saturday 9/22~ Breakfast (No recipe, just making French Toast, Bacon, Eggs....for Dinner!)
Sunday 9/23~ Chicken Stuffed Shells
Monday 9/24~ Turkey Patties
Tuesday 9/25~ Ranch Pork Chops
Wednesday 9/26~ Chicken Roll Ups

Here are some of the recipes that we made last week (before I started the blog) and what we thought of each one.

Meatball Sanwhiches~ These were amazing! I am not a huge meatball fan, but this was so good that I actually took leftovers for lunch the next day which I used to never do! We just used freezer meatballs and they still turned out really good!

Chicken Alfredo Roll Ups~ These were awesome as well. My husband made them and made it like normal lasagna instead of doing the individual roll ups. I think it would taste the same either way!

Chicken Crescent Roll Casserole~ Again, very good! How can anything with crescent, chicken, and cheese not be good though!

Skinny Dorito Taco Bake~ This was overall good, but it didn't turn out the best. The skinny version of this recipe called for a half pound of meat so that made a little bit of a difference. I didn't know what Rotel was and didn't have time to find out so I just left it out which made it a bit dry. My husband doesn't like greek yogurt (a substitute for the sour cream) so that and the fact that it was a little overcooked because of the lack of ingredients overall made the dish too dry. We will for sure try the recipe again adding the Rotel (tomato sauce) and maybe cooking it 25 min instead of the 30 min that it says to.

Easy Calendar Decorating Idea

Hey everyone! Here is another idea I got from Pinterest. It's a super easy and cheap way to make a cute calendar for any purpose. I will be using mine to write out our weekly menu. My husband does the cooking most of the time so it will be an easy way for him to know what to make for dinner. There are a few other ones on Pinterest to check out for inspiration!

Here is what mine looks like!

I got 8 small frames from Wal-Mart. They are cheap plastic 4x6 frames that were $.95 each.  Then I had some bright colored card stock laying around the house already. I printed some cool black and white patterns on the pages and then cut them out to put behind the glass. You can use scrap booking paper or whatever you want. The nice thing is that if we ever wanted to change the paper out to something that isn't so bold, it would be really easy to do.

I also made some funky looking labels for the days and have each one a different font.

I put the frames into a pattern that I liked and used a glue gun to glue the frames together. Make sure that when you are doing this, the piece on the back of the frame that you will be using to hang it up is going to be in the right position.

All that is left is to find a dry erase marker to write on your calendar! This could be a good idea for children, chores, or just for keeping track of your schedule!

Homemade Laundry Soap (Costs $.02 per load!)

Hey everyone! So one of the first things that I found on Pinterest to try out was making my own laundry soap. I used to buy the Great Value Wal-Mart brand, but even the generic brand is about $12 for one gallon jug.

Once I found this idea on Pinterest, I knew I had to try it! I made it once a while back and it lasted me quite a while. Then we ran out, and I didn't have a chance to make any more so we ended up going back to buying the overpriced stuff.

I just made some a few nights ago and am planning on making some more tomorrow. I am going to list out the instructions with pictures (some will be added tomorrow after I take them!) so you can see the process.

This idea was originally from Erin @ Why Not Sew? Here is a link to her blog with the instructions I used. Her post has been very popular because of Pinterest so it has a lot of comments. If you have any question about the process or what specific products to use, please refer to the blog comments on her page or contact me so I can find out for you. I have only tried this recipe a few times and so far it has turned out really good. Things can vary though because of different soaps used, temperatures, etc. From the comments, it looks like this detergent is save to use in High Efficiency washers.

Here is the list of ingredients and tools that you need. I use the pot, grater, funnel, spoon, and containers ONLY for making this detergent.

1 bar of soap (any kind you want)
1 cup of Borax
1 cup of washing soda

1 gallon water (to be boiled)1 gallon cold water
a big pot ( that holds more than 2 gallons)
a grater
a funnel
a long spoon

2 empty gallon jugs/containers

For the soap I used Dial because it was cheap, and I got a bar of Fels Naptha because of some of the comments on Erin's blog. It is used for pre-treating stains. When I make my detergent, I grate up about 1/4 of the Fels Naptha bar and then half of the dial bar. Even though they smell completely different, I like the smell of the bars when mixed together.

The Borax, Washing Soda, and Fels Naptha were all right together in the laundry detergent aisle at Walmart. I think the total cost for everything including the tools that you will only need to buy once was about $20. The actual ingredients was probably $6-$10 of that.

For this amount of supplies, the original blogger can make nine batches of this detergent. Each batch makes 2 gallons of soap. If you were to use a half a cup of soap per load, that is 64 loads per batch so 9 batches would be around 576 loads of laundry for $6-$10. That is significant savings compared to my generic brand costing $12 and giving me just enough soap to wash about 32 loads.

Here is the picture of all my ingredients:

I don't have the in between pictures as I am making the detergent, but I will be sure to add that after I make some more! Until then, I will be using her pictures.

First you will want to grate your soap into the pot. Her recipe calls for 1 bar of soap. I use half of one type of bar and 1/4 of another. If your detergent gets too thick, you can use only half a bar. I promise this is soap and not grated cheese!

Fill one of your gallon jugs with water and pour it into the pot. Cook it until the grated soap dissolves completely. This step can take a while, but it is fine to let it sit and simmer, just stir it every once in a while.

Add once cup of borax and one cup of washing soda to the liquid and let it boil. It will coagulate. When I make mine, it doesn't seem to coagulate very much but you can notice it getting a little thicker. I think the times I have made this, I let it boil too long which results in it being way to thick at the end. You can let it boil for probably 5 minutes as long as you notice it getting thicker.

Turn off the heat and fill the other gallon jug with cold water and add it to the pot, making sure to stir well.

At this point she recommends to pour the detergent into your gallon jugs using a funnel and let them sit overnight. I usually let it sit in the pot overnight and then in the morning I stir it to get rid of the clumps and then add it to my containers. Both times I have done it this way and have made a royal mess. I would recommend pouring the detergent into the containers before you let it sit overnight.

The 3rd and 4th batches I put it in my containers to let it coagulate and it was MUCH easier to do. Please learn from my mistakes and do it this way!

After 24 hours, it will coagulate, and you will have to shake up the bottle so it isn't so thick. Normally, I have to shake the bottle before each use.

You can use as much detergent as you want for each load. If you use around a half a cup per load, this batch should give you enough detergent for 64 loads.

On a side note, if you want to get the labels off your milk containers, while the detergent is still hot, it will be really easy to peel the stickers off. Then take a little bit of nail polish remover and a cotton ball and rub off the stickiness.

Here is my final product:
